A 36-year-old man from North Branch has died at a hospital following a crash in Sterling Heights in which a Jeep collided with the ambulance that was carrying him.

The collision happened on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the intersection of Van Dyke Avenue and Metropolitan Parkway. Sterling Heights police and fire crews were sent to the scene, where one person was reported to be unconscious and several others were hurt.

An initial investigation found that an ambulance operated by Aspire Health System was headed south on Van Dyke Avenue with its emergency equipment turned on. As it moved through the intersection, a black 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the right side of the ambulance's passenger compartment.

The ambulance was carrying a patient and a two-person crew. After the impact, it rolled over and came to rest upright.

Police said everyone involved in the crash, with the exception of the ambulance driver, was taken to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. The crew member who had been riding in the back of the ambulance was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

The patient, a 36-year-old man from North Branch, died at the hospital. The driver of the Jeep was also taken to a hospital, and police said that person's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators said intoxication does not appear to have played a role in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about it to contact Officer Porter of the Sterling Heights Police Department's Traffic Safety Bureau at 586-446-2920.
